Palindrome day
Well, this is a really geeky way to get a blog post done but I hope the novelty of the situation makes it a little bit entertaining for you.
Today is January 11, 2010. In common numeric notation the date is 01/11/10 which is a palindrome because the numbers read the same forward and back. You might be more familiar with palindromes that are word based like “Able was I ere I saw Elba” or “A man, a plan, a canal: Panama.” the list is endless try googling palindrome if you have time.
But back to dates.
A recent article in the Boston Globe put palindrome dates into perspective. The article said, “Thoreau never had one during his lifetime. Neither did George Washington nor Albert Einstein.” What a poor benighted age that was!
The Globe article also claims that there will be a total of 36 palindrome dates in this millennium but things get sticky here. The first palindrome date this millennium was October 2, 2001 (10/02/2001) and the most recent was January 2, 2010. But the perception of the palindrome depends on how you write the date. In Europe 10/02/2010 is 02/10/2010 and thus not a pallindrome. Interestingly the European way of writing dates will provide for 60 palindrome dates in this millennium compared to our mere 36.
