The New Garage

The idea for the New Garage came out of research into the potential effects of globalization on the software industry.  Just about every other industry that we knew of had been through a period of adjustment where companies aggressively worked to lower their costs and their prices to make their wares more appealing to the market.  Often these adjustments meant shifting production to other markets where overhead was lower.  But in the software industry that period of adjustment had not occurred because unlike other products, software is largely a hand crafted product produced by skilled individuals and that approach is largely resistant to mass production.

The New Garage suggests that with improved enablement technology for software development and distribution, the software industry can also participate more fully in the global markets.  The period of adjustment that happened in other industries since the 1970s is now getting underway in software and it will affect not only software development but other industries including computer and telecommunications hardware, wireless networks and every industry that relies directly or indirectly on software, including venture capital.
